From PS 129 to the Big Leagues of Opportunity

At PS 129, we believe in the power of community partnerships to transform lives and few programs exemplify this better than Ice Hockey in Harlem (IHIH). This year, we’re thrilled to highlight Serenity, a fourth-year participant whose dedication to the program has unlocked a world of enriching experiences.

A Journey That Began at Age 6

Students typically join IHIH between the ages of 3 and 7, and after three years of consistent participation, they become eligible for advanced opportunities. Serenity, now in her fourth year, has embraced every moment. Her commitment has not only kept her on the ice, it’s taken her across the country.

Wisconsin Bound Before the First Skate

Before even lacing up for the 2025–2026 season, Serenity flew to Madison to visit the University of Wisconsin. There, she met trailblazer Leila Edwards the first Black woman to play ice hockey on the U.S. Olympic team. She also connected with other Olympians like Harvey and Simms, and legendary coach Mark Johnson, who famously led Team USA to victory over the Red Army in the 1980 Winter Olympics semifinals. It was a powerful moment of inspiration for Serenity and her peers. The trip was thoughtfully planned by IHIH Board President JJ Velez and Executive Director Malik Garvin, both accomplished alumni of Harlem's 35 year legacy nonprofit.

VIP Treatment with the Islanders

Just this week, Serenity and her fellow IHIH peers were treated to a special evening with the New York Islanders. The team’s owner personally greeted them in Section 107, handing out Islanders hats to every player and parent. A stadium meal, sponsored by IHIH founder Todd Levy and facilitated by board member Lisa Warren, made the night even more memorable.

Lasting Memories

After the game, NHL star Anthony Duclair spent time with each player, signing hats and pucks,  and even posing for selfies with players, coaches, and our very own PTA president: Elsa Perez. Duclair's welcoming personality and genuine care left a lasting impression on everyone.

Eyes on the Future

Serenity’s journey with IHIH is far from over. This year, she’ll also be visiting top colleges including Princeton, Williams, and LIU, proof that her hard work and the support of our community partners are paving the way for a bright future.

Celebrating Commitment and Community

We couldn’t be prouder of Serenity and all our IHIH participants. Their stories remind us what’s possible when students, families, and community partners come together. Here’s to more milestones, more memories, and more magic on and off the ice.
